New Book (well to me anyway!)

This is not a new book but I just wanted to write about it because I loved it so much!  I checked this one out online through my local library.  The book starts out when the main character, Emily Ashton, is in mourning for her husband after his death on a hunting trip.  Emily was only shortly married to her husband, so she barely knew him really.  This book is about her discovery into her husband's path.  It's a really interesting fun book with lots of plot twists!  It also shows what traditions were followed in the past and Emily's resistance to those rules and traditions.  The main character is funny and the life that she wants for herself goes against the grain of society rules and procedures.

I definitely recommend reading this book!  So good, so funny.  A quick and easy read!

Okay until next time!  Happy reading!!

Books are awesome especially when they are free!!

A Child Al Confino: The true Story of a Jewish Boy and His Mother in Mussolini's Italy

  BY: Erik Lamet

A Child al Confino by Eric Lamet: NOOKbook Cover

So, as I have said before, I have a Nook.  I've had it for around a year now.  This is my second e ink reader.  I just love them.  I love being able to buy any book at any time.  I love the idea that I am saving trees.  I just love everything about it.  And for those who disagree, for all of the book romantics out there, who just love the smell of a book and flipping the pages and swearing that it's part of the reading experience and you're right, some of the time.  That's why I still have some paper copies of my classics around and I just can't seem to let them go.  But, for everyday reading e ink really is the way to go.  Also, check your local library you would be surprised at all of the ebooks they have that you can check out with just a click of your mouse.

But back to the the original intent of this blog, the book!  So, Barnes & Noble has this thing they do weekly where they give a book away.  Free Fridays!  Being the frugal person that I am, I am always first in line.  In remembrance of the Holocaust they gave this book away for a limited time.

Now, I have read several books in the past, fiction or non-fiction, about World War II and the hardships of the Jewish people, but never anything like this.  The writer, Eric, recalls the details of being forced to leave his home and how he and his mother eventually end up in Italy.  This memoir is made me laugh out loud, it made me cry, and it made me angry.   It was so real.  The author was so candid and honest about everything.  To hear the thoughts of Eric as a child gives you a glimpse of what life was for a lot of Jewish families.  I do not want to give you the impression that this book is sad, it's really not, most of the book was lighthearted.  The attitude of this young boy was just as any other young child.  He was very naive, and just plain foolish in some instances.  His mother is a constant source of strength and the true hero in this memoir.

The hardships of the Lamet family and the other Jewish families is sometimes difficult to read, but so important, so we never forget where our world has been. So that we can prevent anything like the Holocaust ever happening in the future.  Consider reading this book you will not regret it.

Until next time!

Writing Again

So, I haven't written in a while but I'm back and boy have I read books!  I got a Barnes & Noble Nook.  Not the color, because I sill think eink is the BEST!  But,  I will write about it.  I also had a Sony Reader for a while and I like it as well.

New blog to come very very soon!!!!

Sleepy

Okay so it's Thursday and this is the first time I have really ever started this BLOG thing.  I know, I know, a little late in the game.  But I just wanted to talk about the book I am reading right now.

So, since I no longer have a job I read so much more.  Now I am not sure if that's exactly the best thing in the world.  Maybe I need to get out a little bit, pick up the house or something.  But reading is so fun to me.  You basically sit back and enjoy or hate (depending on your mood) someone else's life.  You read a story that makes you feel glad that you have you current life and not someone else's. Or you wish things were like they are in the fairy tale with the love that lasts a lifetime of course, but no challenges that do not end up in the "love conquers all" theme.

Usually that is not reality.  So, I decided to read a book more real right now.  Something that shows the trials that a lot of people go through in their lives.

So, here's the book....

The Surrendered

By: Chang Rae-Lee
The Surrendered

Okay so far this book is really good.  I am about half way through it has given me such a good background on all of the characters.   Basically the main characters are June, Hector, and Nicholas.  June is a Korean refugee now living in America many years after the war.  And we've been given a pretty good glimpse into her past.  The second main character is Hector.  Hector is a war veteran that somehow met June sometime during the war.  And Nicholas is their son who is in a world of trouble.  June and Hector have not spoken in years and now June must reach out to see if Hector can help with their son.

There is a deep background into the Korean war which I find very fascinating.  Sometimes, at least to someone from the younger generation such as myself, the term "war" means something different.  I think war means something different to us.  We've never seen it.  We've been at it for years with no direct results that we see or feel here.  So, to read how war feels when it's in your own home feels different to me.

So, far I say definitely read this book.  It's good.  Even though it's fiction it's informative.  Check it out.

Oh just another side note, I will sometimes feature new books but it just depends on what I am reading.  I do not really care about new releases.  A good book is a good book and maybe they should be reviewed 100's of times so we remember how great they are.
